The residents of Amberley have officially secured the future of The Sportsman pub, completing a community buyout that saves the historic venue from potential redevelopment into housing.
Following a two-year campaign, the freehold purchase was finalised in August 2026. The move was led by Community Sportsman Amberley Ltd, a Community Benefit Society formed after the pub was threatened with closure and conversion into residential property at the end of 2023.
The group has raised £782,368 to date through a combination of community share capital and private loans. These funds have been directed toward a £1.2 million total project goal, which covers both the acquisition and a planned renovation of the site on Rackham Road.
A ‘Sussex-Only’ Beer Mandate
Under its new community ownership, the pub is adopting a strictly local sourcing policy for its cellar. The management has pledged to serve exclusively Sussex-produced beers, supporting independent breweries across the county.
The current real ale selection already features local staples such as Firebird Brewing Co and Lakeside Brewing Co. This “buy local” strategy aims to reinforce the pub’s identity as a regional hub while reducing the carbon footprint of its supply chain.
The site has a long-standing connection to the local brewing industry, having operated as a “beer house” since approximately 1850. For much of its history, it was owned by the Chichester-based brewery Henty & Constable.
Award-Winning Status
The successful buyout follows recent critical acclaim for the venue. Shortly before the final purchase was completed, The Sportsman was named the Western Sussex CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year 2026. Judges praised the pub for its atmosphere and the quality of its regional ales.
Lead campaigner Roger Agate and the society members are now looking toward the next phase of the project. A planned “extreme makeover” of the pub’s stables area is scheduled for late 2026 to further improve the facilities for visitors and residents.
For those interested in supporting the ongoing renovation project, details on how to purchase community shares remain available through the society’s official portal.
